The Standards of Achievement
The "Accent is on Achievement" with the five areas of judging to evaluate the qualities of the total young woman. Each category is equal in the selection process to ensure that every particiapnt is given a fair chance to gain the recognition that she is entitled to receive. The first two stages in the selction process are behind the scenes; the final three are part of the on-stage production. In effect, only 60% of the judgining is seen by an audience. The basis of selection and format is the same at the preliminary level (to select finalists), the local finals, and the state compeition.
The five judged catedgories:
Interivew
In a discussion session with each OYW candidate, the panel of judges evaluates knowledge, perception, clarity of expression, sense of values, and communication skills.
Perfroming Arts
Each contestant is permitted up to two minutes to display a talent of her own choice. The total performace is evaluated for ability and skill in light of the difficulty, as well as stage presence.
Aerobic & Fitness
Physcial well-being and stamina, as well as coordination and agility, are evaluated during group aerobic routines featuring calisthenics, yoga, and pilates.
Presence & Presentation
Naturalness in cariage, posture, and poise in moving about the stage are considered, as well as the ability to verbally comunicate with confidence to a randomly chosen question.
Scholarship & Achievement
A panel of qualified educators evaluate transcripts of grades and scores of schoastic tests to determine the scholastic score. A separate panel evalutes the achievements of contestants in their school and community to determine the achievement portion of the score. The scores are added together (scholastic at 75% and achievement at 25%) to determine the award.
